“Now, where were you two?”

“Well…melody wanted to show me something down the hill and…” Rusty scraped his front hoof back and forth along the wet ground.

“When I whistle, you come. Ya’ll horses know that.”

The rancher’s voice sounded more bewildered than mad. He placed his rough hands upon his hips and just looked at them.

“We didn’t hear ya,” neighed Melody.

“We didn’t. Didn’t even know it was time to git back until Charley done come and find us.”

“And why did he have to find you, now? Raining out there and all the other horses came on in…”

Melody and Claude bowed their heads in shame. Too embarrassed to look the rancher in the eyes.
