I challenge you to write a persona poem — that is, a poem in the voice of a particular person who isn’t you. But I’d like you to choose a very particular kind of person. How about a poem in the voice of a superhero (or a supervillain)?
I am dead tired today. I cannot think in the voice of any one else, least of all myself. I am no superman. Thinking about poetry I do recall what my H.S. English teacher would say: A poem should never mean, it should just be. I recall a lot of things he told us, even if at the time I did not appreciate them. He has had an impact on me and has helped to shape some of the ideas and values that I have retained from a teen-age girl to a middle-aged woman.
Mean, it should just
Be – Beautiful
Words create a picture
Mind’s eye sees it and feels it
Do not overanalyze it
My job is to teach you the classics
Never be one of the goons in the hallway
